MIDDLESBROUGH
Aroma Restaurant & Bar
We were asked to build a structure for Aroma – a popular Italian restaurant in Middlesborough’s Southfield Road – that would allow more diners to access the premises. This was in 2020, during the height of the pandemic when social distancing (staying two metre’s apart) was at its height. The close proximity of tables indoors meant it was impossible for the restaurant to serve the same covers as before.

We developed plans for an attractive lightweight steel frame canopy with retractable glass roof and walls. This meant that it could be removed when not in use so as not to block the pavement unnecessarily. The entrance was via two sliding doors in the centre of the structure. The additional dining space was to be attached to the front of the restaurant, with tables to be placed on the pavement within the structure.
There were initial concerns that the planning department might consider the site over-development and that the structure was also unsympathetic to the existing street scene. However, when the plans came before the council, the project wasn’t contested, but granted planning permission first time round.
The result was a happy restaurant crew and diners who were able to enjoy themselves while remaining within recommended government guidelines.
