We constructed a three-bedroom contemporary detached bungalow at South View in Thornaby. The site itself was quite small so the idea was to maximise the client’s ROI.
The building was south facing, allowing us to capitalise on the potential for solar heating and lighting by installing plenty of floor to ceiling window glass panels. This is particularly the case in the gable extension where the upper floor windows were larger than the lower. Sliding floor to ceiling glass doors also featured in the lower open plan living and dining area at the rear of the property. The space looked out onto the garden at the rear, giving a further feeling of space – and an ‘outdoors ‘in’ touch when the doors were left open.
The upper rooms all had dormer windows – both at the front and side of the property. This didn’t just add physical space to the upper storey, but also provided the house with a more pleasing aesthetic when viewed externally.
The exterior was a mix of white cement and sustainable wood panelling, giving the it a light, eco friendly feel and which is in keeping with the use of solar light via the many glass panels incorporated in the design.
